Papers of an Oregon minister and historian who wrote on the history of the Presbyterian Church in the Pacific northwest. Contains: typescript of Hovey's essay "A husband is a husband even tho [sic] he be a missionary"; correspondence to and from Stanley Church concerning William Gray and related matters, with excerpts from minutes of the Clatsop Plains Presbyterian Church (1850-1855) and Presbytery of Oregon; letters to Hovey from school children, 1983-1984; and scrapbooks, circa 1958-1982, containing clippings, pamphlets, programs, newsletters, brochures, and photographs regarding the Nez Perce in Idaho, the Talmaks Presbyterian camp meetings in Idaho, and the Nez Perce National Historic Park near Lapwai.

Dr. William Henry Gray, a physician and lay missionary for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, was born on May 10, 1810. In 1836, he joined Marcus Whitman and Henry H. Spalding to travel overland and establish a mission for the Indians of the Oregon Country.
